Energy Development & Sacred Sites

Historically and today, energy development often advances without the meaningful input of and at the detriment of Tribes and Pueblos in New Mexico. Despite the need for economic independence and clean energy development, protecting sacred sites must remain central to energy planning.

Our webinar, Energy Development and Sacred Sites, will provide an overview of New Mexico’s major energy projects impacting sacred landscapes, the legal and regulatory frameworks designed to protect these places, and how Tribes and individuals can take action. We will provide a roadmap for how Tribal Nations can effectively use Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and state-level consultation requirements to intervene. We will also provide more information for developers and other stakeholders about the internal structures and operations by which Tribes undertake decision-making for siting projects on and off Tribal land.
